The history of F.R.B.C.V. begins in 1989, when a group of Romanian Baptist Christians who was living in Northern Virginia area initiated a Romanian group with the purpose to worship, pray and study the Bible in their native language. There were approximately 20 persons, gathered together around Lungocia family (Rusalin, Ion, Dumitru, Ilie, and Elisabeta). They were members of Colonial Baptist Church of Stafford, Virginia, where they were active during Sunday services; at a certain time, half the church choir was made up of Romanians. Within the Colonial Baptist Church, having church committee’s approval, the Romanians were studying the scriptures in their native language while the American members participated at Sunday school. One problem remained: the need to pray in Romanian language, “your only land, as the exiled”, as Mircea Eliade put it. From 1995 to 1996, the Romanian Christians from Northern Virginia organized multiple assemblies in different houses where they worshiped, prayed and study the Gospel in Romanian language. A key event took place on June 1st, 1996 when ABUNDANT LIFE BAPTIST CHURCH from Dumfries, Virginia hosted the first assembly of the Romanians as an ethnic group. On March 15st, 1998, Rusalin Lungocia proposed the group to establish the Romanian church. The assembly made up of 18 people voted unanimously the constitution of the church, under the name of the FIRST ROMANIAN BAPTIST CHURCH of VIRGINIA. Shortly, F.R.B.C.V. joined the SOUTHERN BAPTIST CONSERVATIVES of VIRGINIA and the ROMANIAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION of U.S.A. and CANADA. On May 3rd, 1998, the church elected Rusalin Lungocia as deacon. He has held the position since then. On April 28th, 2005, 7 new members joined the church, due to their decision to follow the Lord, after they heard the Gospel and were baptized. Also in 2005 the church grew numerically by other Romanian Christians moving in the area, the total number of members being 32 members. Since the establishment, F.R.B.C.V. was supported spiritually by the Romanian Baptist Association of USA and Canada, through many servants of the Gospel, such as Viorel Clintoc, Pitt Popovici, Valentin Popovici, Titus Bulzan, Achim Pele, George Dancea, Titus Mihet, and Teofil Ciortuz. A noteable fact is that all this time F.R.B.C.V. has not had a local Pastor. On February 16th, 2005, the building of Abundant Life Baptist Church located on 17950 Curtis Drive, Dumfries, VA 22026 got on fire and burned down. This tragic event put both A.L.B.C. and F.R.B.C.V. in the situation of not having a place where to worship. As a gesture of love, DUMFRIES UNITED METHODIST CHURCH located on 3890 Cameron St., Dumfries, VA 22026 offered their old sanctuary to A.L.B.C. and F.R.B.C.V. for joint worship services. In April 2006 A.L.B.C. decided to cease their activity. Thus, F.R.B.C.V. has temporarily been holding Sunday Services in the facilities offered by D.U.M.C. On April 29th, 2007, the General Assembly of F.R.B.C.V. voted Dr. Emil Bartos as Senior Pastor, by 97% Pro. Thus, the new structure of the Committee is: Dr. Emil Bartos – Senior Pastor, Rusalin Lungocia – Deacon, Ion Lungocia – member responsible for Sunday school activity, Florin Bolojan – member responsible for praise and worship, and Daniel Fedor – Secretary. During year 2006 and until now, the attendance to the Sunday Services varied from 50 to 70 people. We believe that our church is going to grow numerically this year, also due to the increasing Romanian community in Northern Virginia – Washington D.C. area, which is estimated to over 15,000 people.
