The Chances of Forgiveness
Matthew 26:20-25
Sunday sermon – 01/01/2012

As Judas watched Jesus being carried away to Pilate, finally he realized the Jewish leaders did indeed intend to put Jesus to death. The sight was devastating to Judas, more than even his money-hungry mind, and Judas felt remorse as he began to experience the intense and profound guilt.

No man could be more evil than Judas Iscariot. No man has been more exposed to the personal relationship he had with the incarnate Son of God, to God’s perfect truth, and to God’s love. Yet in all of those three blessed years with Jesus, Judas did not take so much as the first step of faith.

Judas’s remorse was not μετανοέω repentance of sin, which means a genuine change of mind and will, but just a μεταμέλλομαι, which merely connotes regret or sorrow. Judas was just simply sorry and he experienced only an emotional remorse.

The question remains: Could Judas be forgiven?
Come and find the answer on January 1st, 2012!

Every year most people evaluate the past and make decisions for the following new year. The most common new year resolutions are to lose wight, spend more time with family, and improving personal life. A spiritual resolution is in fact a promise to change something in your life for the glory of God. For the new year of 2012, I would like to introduce the following three spiritual resolutions:

Resolution # 1 – Read the words of Jesus (on red) and be obedient to Him.
We should not read the Bible just to accumulate more Scriptural knowledge, but to gain more understanding on who God is and what is expected of us from the Master. Along with reading the red, pray that God will enable you to carry out in your own life what is written. I am planning myself to use different translations, including Romanian and English, to get a deeper spiritual understanding of the Word of God.

Resolution # 2 – Serve Christ alone, regardless of what others do.
The Christian church is not in need of people who will think they can engineer results, but of faithful followers of Christ that are obedient to serving Christ and live by Biblical principles. Furthermore, obedience to Christ is more valuable to God than religious performance and serving Christ alone has more spiritual significance than reflecting cultural traditions. Instead of limiting your goal to just being religious, make your goal to be more sensitive to Divine appointments made just for your life.

Resolution # 3 – Learn to better appreciate other people.
In the Epistle of James, the writer elaborates on the fact that good water and bitter water does not come out of the same well. In that biblical content, the author is talking about the words one speaks. In this new coming year of 2012, we ought to better appreciate other people and make our goal of doing more, not less, each day of what will be pleasing to our Lord Jesus Christ.

It appears that every individual is going somewhere. In fact, some are running fast toward some direction in life. The 2011 year is almost gone, where are you heading to in 2012? There are three basic types of directions that people take.

.

The first direction that some people take is just going nowhere. There are those people who have no purpose in life. They grow up, get married, find a job, have children, grow old and eventually they die and they never had a clue why they were placed on this planet.

The second direction is the wrong direction that many people take in life. The majority of people walk on that path. The main goal in life for those people is to make money and to exert influence. This may get some empty and without meaning, and many may become the most disappointed. This second person is like a man with a ladder. The man places his ladder against a wall and he climbs it as fast as he can. When he finally gets to the top, he discovers that he had put his ladder against the wrong wall. When he dies and stands before the Almighty God; where influence, money or power won’t help.

The third direction is the right direction that is found by people who has discovered the right purpose in life. Jesus stated; “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14;6, New International Version).

Where are you heading in 2012? Have you discovered the true purpose in life? Have you put your trust in Jesus? Only Jesus will give the right direction in life, the greatest sense of joy and fulfillment that you have ever known.

Pastor Ionel Coltea
